Pages 14-17
They start with describing Tenuta di Valgiano 2001 as a “cloudy day”. But, even with a little swishing in the glass, it starts revealing itself. It is then decanted, and rays of sunlight come through, and they describe the bouquet coming off it as its being decanted like “a child who cannot be contained”.
When decanted properly, they describe it as a really sunny day where the contrast between light and shade burns into your eyes, where you want to jump outside. Its like when you’re anticipating something pleasurable, and the temperature outside goes up by 2-3 degrees.
But the freshness evident in the wine points to the fact that its not just “a sunny day”, this wine, it’s only because it was cloudy before that you get such a sense of freshness from it. They describe the wine as embodying “The sense of openness” you feel when there are rapidly clearing skies, and you are eagerly anticipating something pleasurable to come.
Shizuku explains : this wine is the flagship from the Tenuta di Valgiano winery which is located on the hills above Lucca, just under the PIzzorne hills west of Florence. 1999 was the first vintage (with a great reputation), and has a strictly limited production, which fits the description of “Super Tuscan” perfectly.

I vini d’Italia 2012
Palistorti ’09punt: 15,5/20
